 TARZÁN (USA 1912)
Personaje literario de Edgar Rice Burroughs que nació en el pulp The All-story, con Tarzan of the Apes.
Primera aparición en viñetas en la strip de 1928.
La historia comienza cuando los futuros padres de Tarzán - Lord y Lady Greystoke- son abandonados en la costa africana. Tras el nacimiento de su bebe Lady Greystoke fallece victima de unas fiebres, poco después el padre fallece a manos de un gorila.
El bebe es adoptado por Kala, una mona que ha perdido a su hijo, y crece entre los monos hasta convertirse en Tarzán.
Posteriormente Tarzán conocerá a Jane Porter, se enamorará de ella y volverá a Inglaterra donde recupera su autentico nombre, John Clayton, y su título de Lord. Con el tiempo, Clayton y Jane tendrán un hijo, Jack.

La llamada de la selva es fuerte y Tarzán regresa a África para vivir nuevas aventuras y conocer nuevos mundos, muchos de los cuales rondan la ciencia ficción. Su hijo Jack, que también siente la llamada de la selva, se convertirá en Korak.
Así fue la historia hasta 1932. cuando el estreno de Tarzan the Ape man, primera de las películas interpretada por Johnny Weissmuller, creó otro Tarzán, tan popular como el literario. Básicamente despareció toda referencia al origen inglés del personaje y a su ascendencia aristócrata, a su boda con Jane y, por último Korak fue transformado en Boy, el hijo adoptado de Tarzán y Jane.
En 1915 se publicó The son of Tarzan, donde aparecía, por primera vez, Korak.
En 1918 debutó en el cine con Tarzan of the Apes.
La década de los 30 (del pasado siglo XX)
convierte a Tarzán en el primer héroe multimedia, ya ha pasado de la
literatura a la pantalla, se ha estrenado, con gran éxito, en los
cómics (tiras de prensa) y es una estrella de la radio. Su popularidad
es enrome en todo el mundo occidental.
En 1932 se estrenó la citada Tarzan the ape man, primera de sus películas con sonido y con Johnny Weissmuller.
En 1947 apareció el primer número dedicado a Tarzán en Four Color Comics.
En 1948 llegó la colección propia.
En 1964 se publican los españoles El último ciervo, El zoo del circo, El tesoro de Chaka y La Expedición del Amaranto.
En 1966 se estrena la primera serie de tv protagonizada por actores.
En 1967 comenzó a emitirse la paródica George of the jungle.
En 1979 apareció el español El Barco de los Dioses.
